Guest Stories : Not just long distance swimmers

Whether you’re new to swimming or looking to shave a few seconds off your race time, Triscape coaching and retreats can help you get the most out of your time in the water – and prepare for your next sporting challenge, whatever it might be. In this series, co-founder Keri-anne Payne explains how she and the team have helped very different guests achieve their swimming goals.

Bruce Leslie With Medals

If you’re a serious swimmer who’s looking to improve your time over a set distance, some expert advice and help can make all the difference. Here, Keri-anne looks back on helping a guest shave vital seconds off his time before a big competition by introducing him to Straight-Line Swimming

“We met Bruce in Saint Lucia at The BodyHoliday. He had a big masters swimming competition coming up, and his goal was to be the fastest 65-year-old swimmer over 50m. He was a real time-chaser, and absolutely focused on getting faster and better. That was all he wanted to do! Our job was to help him do that by watching him in the pool and identifying the areas where he could make things easier for himself by adapting his technique.

Working through the fundamentals of our straight-line swimming method was a real eye-opener for Bruce. First of all, he quickly realised that breathing was a massive issue. Fifty metres isn’t much in terms of distance, but you still need to get the breathing side of things absolutely nailed if you want to swim efficiently – and fast. We talked him through how he could make it a much more relaxed and natural process that he fitted into his stroke, and than gave him the confidence that actually he could breathe in the water.

The question of body position also blew his mind! He was a real “looker-upper”, which was slowing him down a lot. As soon as we got him looking down at the bottom of the pool so his body formed a straight line in the water, he could feel himself getting faster. We worked out he was immediately doing two less strokes per 50m pool, so we knew instantly that we’d made a real impact.

Finally, Bruce and David then did a tumble-turn session – the sole aim of that was for him to learn how to do them and push off the wall, so that when he went back for the competition he could shave off those milliseconds. He may have got a bit of water up his nose the first few times, but he quickly got the hang of it! When we got home Bruce had sent us a video over Whatsapp. He was in the pool, looking at the camera – he took his goggles off, said ‘This is for you, David,’ then swam, did a beautiful tumble turn and pushed off the wall. When came up again at the end he was all smiles.

It wasn't just 50m that we needed up helping Bruce tackle, whilst out at The BodyHoliday, Keri-anne managed to get Bruce to try out some open water swimming. As you can see by the photo above Bruce not only tried open water swimming but took on The BodyHoliday 1 Mile sea swim and was delighted with his new medal!

Keri-anne spoke to Bruce recently to find out what he's been up to since their time together at The BodyHoliday.

"I didn't do masters this season due to other commitments but do find myself in the pool still. I still apply all the things David & Keri-anne talked about and demonstrated. I must say I don't really get much in the way of 'teaching' at masters sessions compared to what you offered. It's more of just "Go Go Go" all the time. So I really just go back to your lessons for proper and efficient stroking."
