How To Pick A Goal

Did you make a New Year's resolution?
Have you kept it?
No?
Well you're not alone.
91% of people do not see their resolutions through to completion and it's not surprising because often it's something someone wants rather than really cares about.

Here's 5 steps to give you a far better chance of making lasting change:

1. Start with the ending you care about
Disney calls it happily ever after, sports people call it the dream result. Whatever the name, having an ending you really care about, that you can feel and imagine is vital.
Like any journey, knowing the destination will give you a far better chance of success as it will be much easier to make decisions each day that contribute towards you achieving the result you want.

2. Write your own script
Now that you're aiming for something you care about, start to create a story around it telling yourself (and others!) why you care and so what you're going to do about it.
A couple examples:
"I love the feeling I get when I've done exercise, so today I'm going to the gym." It is far more compelling than I want to go to the gym more.
OR
"To prepare for my Great North 10k run, I'm going to stick on my favourite sound track and practice the last 3k." How much better is that than, I have to go for a run.

3. Get negative!
Think of the things that are mostly likely to mess you up and get in your way, get all those excuses out in the open!

4. Give your future self the best chance of success!
Now think about what you can do in those moments to either avoid or minimise the chances of those things stopping you.
Find it tough getting out of bed? Put your alarm at the other side of the room.
Too cold to run? Splash out on an awesome new top so you feel excited to wear it.

5. Go from victim, to in control
There are some things that you just have to accept, things that have to happen, that will get in your way... work, sleep, errands. However, if you care enough to look, there's always opportunities in your day to choose to chase your dream result.

When I get home from work, I don't sit on Facebook, I practice for my 10k.

If you want something to happen, make it a choice.
